An-Najah Participates in a Workshop on Disaster Risk Reduction in Beirut 20 March 2016

Professor Jalal Dabeek, Director of the Urban Planning and Disaster Risk Reduction Mitigation Center (UPDRRC) at An-Najah and Vice President of the National Authority for Disaster Risk  participated in a workshop on disaster risk reduction in Beirut as part of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030.

The workshop aimed at discussing the progress made on the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction projects implemented by parenting countries. The Palestinian delegation discussed the Urban Planning Centre’s achievements, activities and the SASPARM2 project.

The workshop discussed study cases in the Arab World and the Ten-point Checklist-  Essentials for Building the resilience of nations and communities to disasters (Sendai Framework for DRR)

 

Notes:

  • The workshop was moderated by the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction of the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) and the Disaster Risk Management Unit in Lebanon.
  • The workshop was also attended by experts from Lebanon, Palestine, Jordan, Sudan, Egypt and Tunisia.
  • SASPARM2 is implemented in collaboration with the European Centre for Training and Research in Earthquake Engineering “EUCENTRE” and the Institute for Advanced Study of Pavia –IUSS. The project   includes a number of activities, mainly: training courses in the field of seismic design for buildings for engineers from engineering offices, workshops with ministries and government institutions and non-governmental organizations, public awareness campaigns for citizens and students, scientific publications, exchange of visits, etc.
  • The Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030 was adopted at the Third UN World Conference in Sendai, Japan. It aims at preventing new and reducing existing disaster risk through the implementation of integrated and inclusive economic, structural, legal, social, health, cultural, educational, environmental, technological, political and institutional measures that prevent and reduce hazard exposure and vulnerability to disaster, increase preparedness for response and recovery, and thus strengthen resilience.
